Taco van Glins (also: Taecke van Glins ; born July 3, 1619 in Deventer , † February 11, 1673 in Franeker ) was a Dutch legal scholar .

Life

The son of Tacco van Gliens and his wife Aleid ter Brugge came from a Frisian noble family. Already at the age of thirteen he lost his father, which is why his mother took care of his further education. On November 14, 1640 he enrolled as a student at the University of Franeker , on September 3, 1641 he moved to the University of Leiden . After that, its traces are lost for a few years. It was not until 1647 that he appeared with a treatise Tractatus sing. de Mora. In quo perdifficilis haec et diffusa materia brevissimis aphorismis breviter et dilucide explicatur (Deventer 1647). The book was dedicated to the members of the Frisian court.

In 1665 a much more advanced work appeared in Amsterdam Aenmerckingen ende Bedenckingen over de Zee-Rechten, uyt het Placcaet van Koninck Philips uytgegeven den lesten Octobris 1563 , which already shows a progressive legal conception of the law of the sea . The work was reprinted several times and has long been considered the standard work of Dutch maritime law. This work also seems to have caught the eye of the curators of the University of Franeker, who wanted him to succeed him after the death of Professor Willem Cup (1604–1667). On February 27, 1667 he received the doctorate after an entrance examination .

Since this approach violated academic etiquette because he had not received a proper doctorate, Glins got into an uncomfortable argument with Ulrich Huber . Nevertheless, on May 18, 1667 he was appointed professor of law and he received a salary of 1,000 guilders, which was quite impressive for the time. He began his lectures on May 23, 1667, but his activity did not last long. After he was elected rector, he died. His colleague Sylvester Jacob von Danckelman (1640–1695) gave him a funeral oration and he was buried in the Reformed Martinskirche in Franeker, where an epitaph was built for him . This contains his coat of arms and an inscription made by his colleague Michiel Buschius (1625–1681).

Glins was married to Magaret Sophia, daughter of Balthasar Gijsberts op den Berge and his wife Magarethe van Rensen, from 1656. There are said to be four children from this marriage.
