Tadeusz Lewicki

Tadeusz Lewicki (born January 28, 1906 in Lemberg , Galicia , † November 22, 1992 in Krakow ) was a Polish orientalist who made himself indispensable for science with numerous works and studies, especially in the study of the Ibadiyya (Ibadites) and when collecting and evaluating related sources.

life and work

Lewicki studied Arabic and Semitic Philology at what was then Jan Kazimierz University , was director of the Institute for Oriental Philology at the University of Cracow from 1949 to 1969 and, at the same time, headed the Numismatics Section of the Institute for the History of Material Culture of the Polish from 1953 to 1968 Academy of Science. Lewicki was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Wroclaw on April 23, 1986 .

Lewicki was married to the orientalist Anna Kowalska (1920–2009).
