Location of the Düren opencast mine between Düren and Langerwehe

In the Düren opencast mine in Gürzenich , lignite mining began on May 27, 1941. The daily output was limited to 5,000 tons.

The operator laid the Lucherberger Bahn to completely backfill the mine site, which was closed on February 28, 1956. Starting in 1962, it transported around 18,000 cubic meters of overburden and loess from the Inden opencast mine every day on narrow-gauge tracks .

At the beginning of December 1966, the high-water Essigbach broke into the former open-cast mine with 150,000 cubic meters of water - a kind of advance on Lake Düren had the water not seeped away again. As part of the recultivation , the popular Gürzenich bathing lake was created until 1969, filled with water from the Rur .
