Location of the Alfred opencast mine between Düren and Langerwehe

The Alfred opencast mine near Konzendorf was opened up in 1913.

history

The first lignite was extracted there in 1917 . It was needed for the Weisweiler briquette factory built in 1910 and the neighboring “Zukunft” power plant from 1914. The first debris from the connecting opencast mine Düren in Gürzenich , opened in 1938/39, served to tilt the Konzendorfer mine, which was already completed in 1940. 132 hectares of the former mining area were recultivated for agriculture. The Echtzer See was created in 1959 from the remaining hole . It is used for water sports and recreation.
