Daily mirror checkpoint
The Tagesspiegel checkpoint or short Checkpoint is a journalistic e-mail newsletter of the Berlin newspaper " Tagesspiegel ", the selected events from the political, cultural and social events of the day Berlin summarizing in an entertaining way and commented. It has been published since November 2014 and has around 100,000 subscribers (as of January 2016).
Idea and format
The checkpoint is based on an idea by editor-in-chief Lorenz Maroldt and was originally written by him on a daily basis. The format should "provide the readers [...] with informative and entertaining reading to start the day". The checkpoint is neither intended to replace nor to promote the print and e-paper edition of the Tagesspiegel; it only gives an overview of events and links not only to articles in the Tagesspiegel, but also to other newspapers, blogs or Twitter profiles.
With the Checkpoint, Maroldt intends a new, "extremely subjective, pointed, sometimes provocative form of local reporting". Neither the newsletter nor the local reporting are new; the checkpoint, however, mixes “two well-known things into a new form.” The jury of the Grimme Online Awards thinks of the checkpoint that this is a “90s technology (newsletter) [...] answer to the question of how local and perhaps sub-local journalism can also look like online. "
Maroldt is now writing the checkpoint in alternation with other members of the editorial team ( Ann-Kathrin Hipp , Laura Hofmann, Robert Ide , Stefan Jacobs , Anke Myrrhe, Björn Seeling ). Stefanie Golla and Nadine Voss are working on the creation of the newsletter. It is sent Monday through Saturday at 6 a.m. The subscription was initially free. The full newsletter is now chargeable; there is a free shorter version.
content
The checkpoint summarizes Berlin-related daily events from different areas (politics, administration, economy, culture) and comments on them in an entertaining way. According to Lorenz Maroldt, "basically all reports are small glosses and comments". It also contains practical information such as weather and traffic reports and event information.
The newsletter is divided into several categories. The section “Today's News” contains longer, the “Short Distance” section shorter reports, mostly from Berlin's politics and administration. Recurring keywords are used to report on individual cases that are not of paramount relevance (for example, positive experiences of individual Checkpoint readers with the Berlin administration under the keyword "Office but happy"). The "short-haul" section always ends with the "BER count up days since it was not opened".
The messages are followed by a quote or several and a tweet or several, mostly with a Berlin reference, under “Quote” and “Tweet of the day”. The “Berlin Today” section provides information on traffic, demonstrations, court hearings, visits by foreign state guests and official events. The “City Life” section conveys news from the gastronomy and night life (for example new openings, restaurant and bar recommendations or information on exhibitions that are about to end). "Berliner Gesellschaft" contains birthdays, news of death and the background of a stumbling block . The newsletter ends with a mostly humorous final remark under the heading "Encore".
More newsletters from the Tagesspiegel appear under “Tagesspiegel People”. They contain information on individual districts of Berlin in twelve different versions and appear weekly.
Awards
The newsletter was awarded the Grimme Online Award 2015. The jury judged:
“Required reading [...] - for readers across Berlin's borders. [...] A tough classification hits Berlin's mouth. "
The Checkpoint won the German Local Journalist Award 2014 from the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in the “Innovations” category. The jury's statement was:
“The 'Checkpoint' demonstrates a new format. In the Berlin newsletter, all the texts are short, the reports and - particularly beneficial - the comments. There is a lot of flavor here in brevity. The Berliner can feel good. "
Maroldt received the “Golden Blogger 2015” award for the Checkpoint.
The checkpoint received an unofficial award (according to Stefan Niggemeier, the “ accolade ”) just three months after its first appearance by the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Michael Müller , when he announced in the House of Representatives in defense of allegations made at the checkpoint: “Not everything is in the 'Checkpoint' is correct.
