Tahmasb Mazaheri ( Persian طهماسب مظاهری; * 1953 ) is an Iranian politician and economist and was Governor of the Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran from September 2007 to September 2008 .

Career

Tahmasb Mazaheri studied at the University of Tehran , and graduated with a master's degree in civil engineering .

From 1991 to 1994 he was Secretary General of the Iranian Central Bank. After the presidential elections in 2001 , he was installed in Mohammad Chātami's second term as Minister of Economics and Finance, but was dismissed by the President before the end of his term in April 2004. After the election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, he held the post of State Secretary in this ministry from 2005 to 2006 . Safdar Hosseini was succeeded as minister . He then became chairman of the Iranian Export Development Bank . Exports to Asia in particular increased during his tenure.

After the removal of his predecessor Ebrahim Sheibani from the office of Governor of the Iranian Central Bank on August 26, 2007, Mazaheri was appointed as the new President of the Central Bank on September 5, 2007. Mazaheri was seen as more open to Ahmadinejad's reform ideas in the banking sector, such as strengthening the interest ban . On the day of his appointment, he called for the Islamic interest ban to be enforced. He also caused a stir with the news that the process was almost complete, no more export transactions were carried out in US dollars and that Iran's foreign exchange reserves were also beginning to be shifted from the US dollar to other currencies.

In September 2008, Mazaheri was removed from his post as central bank governor by Ahmadinejad, and Mahmoud Bahmani was his successor .

On February 2, 2013, Bild am Sonntag reported that the Iranian who had arrived from Turkey and who had a check from the Banco de Venezuela for 300 million Bolívares (54 million euros) in his luggage on January 21 at Düsseldorf Airport found Mazaheri should have acted. After a month of checking, the customs administration returned the check. The money is earmarked for the construction of 10,000 apartments that were built in Venezuela with Iran's help. According to customs, no evidence of a criminal investigation was found.
