Tahsis is a small community on the northwest coast of Vancouver Island , in the Canadian province of British Columbia . The parish is approximately 60 kilometers northwest of Gold River and is part of the Strathcona Regional District . Tahsis is located on the banks of Tahsis Inlet , a branch of the Nootka Sound .

history

Originally the country was settled by the First Nations , so the history goes back further than the historiography dominated by European immigrants. The Mowachaht-Muchalaht lived and still live in the area around today's Tahsis . Some of the members of the tribe still live in one of their reservations, which extends as far as the community. Corresponding historical references can be found here and especially in the surrounding area. The existence of the First Nations can be proven in this region for around 4,200 years.

The "European" part of history in this region begins with the arrival of the Spanish explorers in 1774 and the British in 1778. An important regional source for the following period is John R. Jewitt , who was with the Mowachaht-Muchalaht from 1803 to 1805 lived.

Except for the fur trade, this part of Vancouver Island remained largely untouched by European settlers for the next 100 years. This only changed in the early 1900s when the timber industry began to spread to here as well. In 1938, a post office opened in what was then called Port Tahsis.

Various companies tried to set up sawmills on the west coast of Vancouver Island. The area around Tahsis offered the advantage that the location is protected from the weather. Therefore the sawmill built here was able to hold up. The present-day village developed from the loggers' lodgings, which were initially floating on the water. By the 1950s, Tahsis had grown into a bustling village with two churches, a school, and a doctor. However, a public road from Tahsis to Gold River was not opened until 1972. Until then, the settlement could only be reached by boat or plane. Over time, the population grew to up to 2,500. Since the late 1970s, however, the number of inhabitants slowly sank to today's number, the reason being the decreasing number of jobs in the wood processing industry (closure of the sawmill).

Demographics

The census in 2011 showed a population of 316 inhabitants for the settlement. The city's population has decreased by 13.7% compared to the 2006 census and is thus in the opposite trend to the average for the entire province of British Columbia, where the population also increased by 7.0%. With an average age of 52.5 years, the population here is also much older than in the rest of the province, with 41.9 years.

education

Tahsis is part of School District # 84 - Vancouver Island West . In the small community there is only one school, a combined elementary school / secondary school .

politics

The granting of local self-government for the settlement took place on June 17, 1970 ( incorporated as Village Municipality ).

The town's mayor has been Martin Davis since the 2018 election. Together with four other citizens, he forms the council of the municipality for three years.

economy

The main industry in Tahsis is forestry.

The median income of Tahsis workers in 2005 was well below average C $ 16,960  , while at the same time the average for the entire province of British Columbia was C $ 24,867. The difference in income between men (C $ 21,395) and women (C $ 12,822) is above average in Tahsis, which is reflected on the one hand by the different pay in the respective main areas of employment (men = wood processing industry and forestry; women = trade and catering) and on the one hand explained to others by the different levels of employment of men and women.

traffic

Tahsis has neither a direct connection to a motorway, nor is there a railroad here. The connection to the east coast is via an approximately 40 miles long, narrow road to Gold River (the Tree to Sea Drive ) and from there via Highway 28 .

On the southern outskirts of Tahsis is the local sea airport on Tahsis Inlet ( IATA airport code : ZTS, ICAO code : -, Transport Canada Identifier: CAL9). There is also a small heliport in the eastern part of Tahsis.

Tahsis is the starting point for various ferry connections to other small towns on the west coast of Vancouver Island. From here ferries run to Yuquot , Kyuquot or Port Eliza.
