The Gold River community is located in the Canadian province of British Columbia . It is located, as one of the few, on the west coast of Vancouver Island and lies on one of the three arms of the Nootka Sound , the Muchalat Inlet. It is also traversed by the river of the same name, on which the Gold Muchalat Provincial Park is located a few kilometers upstream . The city is connected to the island's infrastructure via Highway 28 .

history

The Nuu-chah-nulth , also known as Nootka , have always settled in the area of the municipality . To the north of the village of Gold River is the village of Tsaxana , populated by Indians who represent the descendants of the indigenous people.

In Nootka Sound, west of the village, is Nootka Island . There, in 1778, when James Cook was looking for the Northwest Passage , a European came ashore in this area for the first time.

The Gold River village itself did not emerge until the mid-1960s, when the wood and paper industries started moving into the area. The community grew relatively quickly, so that on September 2, 1965, the granting of local self-government for the community took place ( incorporated as District Municipality ). Further awards were made in 1972 (as Village Municipality ) and 1981 (as Village ).

Gold River is the first location in Canada with completely underground electrical wiring.

Demographics

The 2011 census revealed a population of 1,267 for the small community. The city's population has decreased by 7.0% compared to the 2006 census, while the population in the province of British Columbia increased by 7.0% at the same time.

Highway 28 leads east to Campbell River , where it joins Highway 19 , which opens up Vancouver Island in a north-south direction. At the western end of Highway 28 there is a port, from where surrounding communities can be reached with the help of a water taxi , a converted mine sweeper, which otherwise has no road connection. The tidal range of the Nootka Sound continues in Muchalat Inlet and affects port operations in Gold River. There it is usually between 2 and 3 meters.

An airline offers the option of seaplanes to reach the community.

Attractions

East of the community are two provincial parks, White Ridge Provincial Park and the larger Strathcona Provincial Park . The second is the largest on Vancouver Island and also has the island's highest mountain in the center. North of Gold River is the smaller Gold Muchalat Provincial Park .
