The typhoon Damrey was the strongest typhoon the past 30 years in southern China . It reached wind speeds of up to 150 km / h.

Damrey caused most of the damage on the Chinese island of Hainan and in the region around Guangdong . Around 200,000 residents had to be brought to safety in the affected area. Even so, there were six fatalities. Furthermore, countless houses and dikes were destroyed and numerous trees were uprooted. Large areas were affected by power outages. 67 flights were canceled at Haikou Airport , affecting around 5,000 passengers, including many tourists.
On September 23, 2005, the typhoon swept across the Philippines , killing at least 16 people.
On the night of September 26, the typhoon reached Vietnam , where attempts were still being made to get 100,000 residents to safety.
On September 27, 2005, the typhoon reached the north of Vietnam (the province of Thanh Hóa and the port city of Hải Phong ). Around 50 people died in the floods. In the largest evacuation operation to date, around 300,000 people from the coastal region were brought to safety.
