Tail Island ([ teɪl ˈaɪlənd ], from English tail , tail, tail ' ) is a circular island with a diameter of 2 km and a height of up to 130 m off the south side of the Trinity Peninsula at the northern end of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is halfway between Egg Island and Eagle Island in the northeastern part of the Prince Gustav Canal .
The island was probably discovered by a team led by Johan Gunnar Andersson on the Swedish Antarctic Expedition (1901–1903) led by Otto Nordenskjöld . The Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) mapped them in 1945 and named them after their relative geographic location to the neighboring islands of Eagle Island and Beak Island .
