St-Georges is a Roman Catholic church in the Alsatian parish of Châtenois . It is under monument protection as a monument historique .

history

The oldest part of the church is the Romanesque bell tower from the second third of the 12th century. Nothing is known about the predecessor churches. The current nave was built between 1759 and 1761 according to plans by the architect Dorgler.

architecture

The Romanesque tower was built south of the choir on a square floor plan and has four wichhouses . On the two upper floors there are four coupled arched windows on each side. In 1525 the Knickhelm received brightly glazed bricks (meanwhile renewed). The nave has five window axes on each of the long sides. To the west is the five-sided choir, which is drawn in and slightly lower than the nave. On the east side of the gable there is a central projectile with corner pilasters, which extends to the base of the gable and ends there in a triangular gable. This is flanked by plinths with vases that also sit on the corners of the building. In the risalits there is a round arch portal with a door with a basket arch. In the gable of the church there are three oculi .

The nave is a stepped hall with flat roofed aisles and barrel vaults in the central nave. The arched arcades are supported by high square columns. In both aisles there are galleries that spare the last yoke, creating the impression of a transept. Pilaster strips structure the walls of the aisles. Pilasters sit in the corners of the choir. The lower part of the choir is paneled. Remains of a wall painting can be seen on the left side of the choir. In the flat ceiling of the choir sits a quatrefoil of stucco in which a ceiling paintings can be found with Christ representation. The wall above the triumphal arch is also painted, with a wooden crucifix in the center.

On the east side of the central nave there is an organ loft with a wooden parapet on two slender rectangular columns.

On the north side of the church there is a sacristy and a small chapel, which was probably used as a sanctuary or ossuary . Originally a holy grave stood here , the remains of which are now in the church.

Furnishing

The high altar from the 18th century is dominated by a large-format painting depicting St. Georg shows. The two side altars also date from the 18th century. Two wooden reliefs show the birth and the Assumption of Mary based on Dürer's motifs. They probably come from the workshop of Hans Bongartz in Colmar . The church's furnishings also include some wooden figures, including a St. George from the 17th century, a mother of God from the 18th century and several figures of saints from the 19th century. According to an inscription, the font was created in 1762. Also valuable is a wooden crucifix with mother-of-pearl inlay, which was created around 1763 - probably in Jerusalem - for the Franciscan order in Séléstat and which came to Châtenois during the Revolution. Several epitaphs from the 17th century have been preserved.

The organ and organ brochure date from 1765 and were created by Andreas Silbermann . Charles Wetzel revised the instrument slightly in 1867. In May 1917, German occupation forces destroyed the organ. This damage could not be repaired until 1931. The organ was last restored in 1973/74.
