Tailgate (Jazz)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tailgate ( engl. For tailgate , door) is a trumpet style of hot jazz . He is characterized by an open and robust style of play with particularly striking glissandi .

The term comes from New Orleans , where jazz bands were already driven through the streets on carts for advertising purposes at the beginning of the 20th century and played. The trombonist sat on the lowered rear door of the car so as not to hinder his colleagues with his far-reaching playing movements on the slide trombone .

Early representatives of the Tailgate style were Kid Ory , Jack Teagarden , Louis Nelson and George Brunies . The playing of Roswell Rudd and Fred Lonzo was also based on this style.
