The Tairow Ta-3 ( Russian Таиров Та-3 ) was the prototype of a Soviet , twin-engine fighter aircraft from the Second World War .

development

The Ta-3 was designed by Vsevolod Tairow as a middle-decker with a double tail. Tairow graduated from the Moscow Aviation Institute in 1933 , worked for a while in Nikolai Polikarpov's design office, and was appointed head of the newly established experimental design department (Opytny Konstruktorski Otdjel, OKO) in Kiev in 1935. He constructed various types there before the heavy, twin-engine fighter aircraft OKO-6 and OKO-6bis - renamed Ta-1 in 1941 - emerged as direct forerunners of the Ta-3 around 1939/1940. The latter was intended to combat enemy ground forces and was granted a 37-mm and two 20 mm machine guns in the fuselage nose quite a strong armament. The drives were two M-89 - double radial engines of Tumanski each with 845 kW (1,150 hp) selected. The flight tests began in May 1941 and was carried out by J. K. Stankewitsch, who was able to reach a maximum speed of 580 km / h at an altitude of 7100 m in the course of the tests. Shortly afterwards, the flights had to be suspended due to the German attack and the test department and the attached plant had to be evacuated to the east of the country.

In September of that year, the relocation and re-erection of the complex was so far completed that testing could be restarted. At the same time, construction of a second prototype, known as the Ta-3bis , began. This specimen had a fuselage lengthened to 12.2 m (Ta-3: 9.8 m) and the wingspan was also increased to 14.00 m (Ta-3: 12.65 m) by using an enlarged center section of the wing. . The ASch-82 developed by Arkadi Schwezow was planned as the engine, the series production of which had started shortly before and which had higher performance compared to the M-89 . On October 29, 1941, however, Tairow was unexpectedly killed in a plane crash, which resulted in the termination of the program.
