The Huánuco District is located in the Huánuco Province in the Huánuco Region in central Peru . The district was founded on November 4, 1823. It has an area of 96.55 km². The 2017 census counted 89,502 residents. In 1993 the population was 74,676, in 2007 74,774. The administrative seat of the district is the regional and provincial capital Huánuco . On the banks of the Río Cozo , 4.5 km west of the city of Huánuco, is the archaeological site of Kotosh .
Geographical location
The Huánuco district is located in the Peruvian Central Cordillera on the left bank of the Río Huallaga . Its left tributary Río Cozo flows through the southwestern part of the district.
The Huánuco district borders on the Quisqui district to the west, the Santa María del Valle district to the north, the Amarilis district on the opposite bank of the Huallaga River and the Pillco Marca and San Francisco de Cayrán districts to the south .
