The Santa María del Valle district is located in the Huánuco Province in the Huánuco Region in central Peru . It has an area of ​​481.9 km². In 2017 the population was 19,226. In 1993 the population was 17,965, in 2007 it was 18,373. The population is mostly of indigenous descent with Quechua as their mother tongue . The administrative seat of the district is the small town of Santa María del Valle with 2064 inhabitants located on the right bank of the Río Huallaga at 1916  m altitude (as of 2017). Santa María del Valle is 10 km northeast of the regional and provincial capital Huánuco . The place emerges from a foundation on September 13, 1539 as Nuestra Señora de Mont-Serrat de Coni .

Geographical location

The Santa María del Valle district is located in the Peruvian Central Cordillera . It has a longitudinal extension in NW-SE direction of 44 km. The extreme southeast of the district is traversed by the Río Huallaga.

The Santa María del Valle district is bordered to the west by the Chavinillo and Aparicio Pomares districts (both in the Yarowilca province ), to the northwest by the Marías district ( Dos de Mayo province ), to the north and east by the Churubamba district and to the southeast by the Umari district ( Pachitea province ) and in the southwest to the Amarilis , Huánuco and Quisqui districts .
