The Talisman class was a class of four destroyers , the construction of which was being prepared for the Turkish Navy at the outbreak of the First World War . The construction plans were taken over by the Royal Navy and the ships were completed for military use. The fourth destroyer, HMS Turbulent , was lost in the Battle of Skagerrak after just a few days of service , the other three were sold for demolition in 1921. The hull of this class formed the basis for the hull of the V and W classes , arguably the best destroyer class of the First World War .

draft

The Talisman- class destroyers were built to a design by the Hawthorn, Leslie & Company shipyard in Hebburn near Newcastle upon Tyne . Allegedly they were supposed to be built for the Turkish Navy. In November 1915, the Admiralty placed a construction contract for four destroyers, which were to be named Napier , Narborough , Offa and Ogre . With five 102mm guns and three torpedo tube twin sets, they were heavily armed for their time.

Building history

The shipyard began building the four destroyers with build numbers 477 to 480 in December and January 1915 after the two smaller Hawthorn "M" specials were launched. Deviating from the drafts, however, the Royal Navy only had two torpdo tube sets installed. With this, too, the destroyers corresponded more closely to the flotilla commanders of the Faulknor class originally intended for Chile and the single specimen HMS Swift . Two guns arranged side by side were placed on the forecastle deck. The remaining guns were mounted between the first and second chimneys, behind the platform for the searchlight and on a pedestal on the quarterdeck. All guns were protected by half-shields. Because of their size and armament, they looked more like flotilla leaders than M-class destroyers. In February 1915, the names of the destroyers under construction were changed, all of which now began with T. The ships were launched between July 15, 1915 and January 1916. At the same time, the shipyard manufactured the flotilla leader Marksman , who was appointed from the 1913/14 budget and who was delivered in November 1915. After the Talisman destroyers were launched, the shipyard began building standard M-class destroyers ( Pigeon , Plover ) in July and the R-class ( Sarpedon , Starfish , Stork ) from September 1915, which were followed by other destroyers and until the end of the war Flotilla leaders of the standard types followed.
The shape of the hull of the Talisman class was seen as so advantageous that it was adopted for the V and W class destroyers built from 1917 onwards , which were probably the pinnacle of destroyer construction of their time.

Calls

The first completed talisman was assigned to the 11th Submarine Flotilla in Blyth . From May the Trident was also used there. This flotilla, which was subordinate to the Grand Fleet, was supposed to support the fleet's advances into the southern North Sea with its submarines at previously determined positions and search courses. The destroyers were supposed to support the submarines and improve the transmission of orders to them. To bring in their crews, the destroyers first came to the 10th Destroyer Flotilla of the Harwich Force . During this training phase, Termagant and Turbulent were with the 13th DF at the end of May and took part in the Skagerrak Battle , in which the Turbulent was lost with the entire crew after a collision with SMS Westfalen . The flotilla led by the light cruiser Champion consisted of another ten M-class destroyers, of which Nestor and Nomad were lost. She secured the British battle cruiser group and was supposed to stop the retreat of the German battle cruisers with a torpedo attack that afternoon. During this attempt, there was a battle with the German torpedo boats with a similar mission, in which the battleships of the emerging ocean-going fleet intervened and sank the two aforementioned M-class destroyers. Turbulent sank in the night as British destroyers ran into the line of the retreating ocean-going fleet.

Termagant moved in September 1916 to the 10th Submarine Flotilla, which was also used in the Grand Fleet . In November 1917, Termagant and the Trident, also used by the 13th Submarine Flotilla , switched to the 6th Destroyer Flotilla of the Dover Patrol . The talisman used in the 11th Submarine F. was transferred to the 3rd DF in April 1918 . The flotilla, which was being reorganized, was ultimately led by the Nimrod with Talisman as second leader and at the end of the war it had eleven M-class destroyers.

Whereabouts

The three remaining destroyers of the class were added to the reserve in 1919 and sold for demolition in 1921.
