The Cabra Corral dam or General Manuel Belgrano dam ( Spanish: Represa Cabra Corral , Dique Cabra Corral or Represa General Manuel Belgrano ) is a dam with a hydropower plant in the province of Salta , Argentina . It dams the Río Salado to a reservoir. The dam and the associated hydroelectric power plant are also known as the Cabra Corral hydroelectric power plant complex (Spanish Complejo hidroeléctrico Cabra Corral ).

The dam is used to generate electricity and supply drinking water. Construction began in February 1966. It was completed in 1972. The dam and the hydroelectric power station are state-owned ( Estado Nacional ). AES Alicura SA was given the license to operate on November 30, 1995. The dam was named after General Manuel Belgrano .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is an embankment dam with a height of 94.75 m above the river bed (maximum height 100 or 113.75 m). The top of the dam is at a height of 1043.75 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 510 m, its width at the top 10 m. The volume of the barrier structure is 8.263 million m³.

The dam has both a flood relief and a bottom outlet . A maximum of 1500 m³ / s can be discharged via the flood discharge, and a maximum of 85 m³ / s via the bottom outlet.

Reservoir

The normal target is between 1017 and 1037 m. With a storage target of 1037 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 117.21 km² and holds 2.784 (or 3.13) billion m³ of water. The maximum storage destination is 1037 m, the minimum 960 m.

power plant

The power plant's machine house is located at the foot of the dam. The installed capacity is 102 (or 103.8) MW . The average annual generation is given as 220 (or 250) million  kWh . The power plant went into operation on September 14, 1978.

The three Francis turbines each have a maximum output of 34.6 MW. The nominal speed of the turbines is 250 min −1 . The height of fall is between 71 and 91 m. The flow rate is 43.76 m³ / s (maximum 44, minimum 25.5 m³ / s).
