The El Carrizal dam ( Spanish Represa El Carrizal or Dique El Carrizal ) is a dam with a hydropower plant in the province of Mendoza , Argentina . It dams the Río Tunuyán to a reservoir. The dam and the associated hydropower plant are also known as the El Carrizal hydropower plant complex (Spanish Complejo hidroeléctrico El Carrizal ).
The dam is used for power generation and irrigation. Construction began in June 1965. It was completed in November 1971. The dam and the hydroelectric power station are state-owned ( Departamento de Hidráulica ). The license for the operation was transferred to CEMPPSA in 1998.
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a bulk dam with a height of 46 m above the river bed . The top of the dam is at an altitude of 790 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 2113 m, its width at the crown 10 m. The volume of the barrier structure is 6.83 million m³.
The dam has a flood relief system that can discharge a maximum of 1600 m³ / s.
Reservoir
The normal destination is between 769.5 and 785.5 m. With a storage target of 785.5 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 34.8 km² and holds 462 million m³ of water. The maximum storage destination is 787.5 m.
power plant
The power plant's machine house is located at the foot of the dam on the right side of the dam. The installed capacity is 17 MW . The average annual generation is given as 83 (or 85) million kWh .
The two Francis turbines have a maximum output of 8.5 MW each. The nominal speed of the turbines is 250 min −1 . The fall height is between 28 and 39.5 m. The flow rate is 30 m³ / s (maximum 31, minimum 14 m³ / s).
