The dam Gabriel y Galán ( Spanish Presa de Gabriel y Galán ) is a dam with hydroelectric power station in the municipality of Guijo de Granadilla , province of Cáceres , Spain . It dams the Alagón to a reservoir. The dam is used for both power generation and irrigation. It was completed in 1961. The dam is state-owned and operated by Iberdrola .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 73 m above the foundation base . The top of the wall is at a height of 388 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 1020 m. The volume of the dam is 587,790 m³.

The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 57 (or 228) m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 2200 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 3536 (or 3676) m³ / s.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 386 m, the reservoir extends over an area of ​​around 46.83 km² and holds 911 (or 924) million m³ of water; 924 million m³ of this can be used.

power plant

The installed capacity of the power plant is 110 (or 111.2) MW . The power plant can be operated as a pumped storage power plant. The maximum power consumption in pumping operation is 90 MW. The drop height is 60 m. The maximum flow rate is 230 m³ / s. The machine house is located about 50 m from the dam on the right side of the river.
