The Póvoa dam ( Portuguese Barragem da Póvoa or Barragem de Póvoa e Meadas or Barragem de Nisa ) is located in the Alentejo region of Portugal in the Portalegre district . It dams the river Nisa , a left (southern) tributary of the Tejo , to a reservoir (port. Albufeira da Barragem de Nisa ). About eight kilometers northwest of the dam is the small town of Nisa .
The project to build the dam began in 1925. The construction was completed in 1928. The dam is used to generate electricity. It is owned by Hidroeléctrica do Tejo, SA (HIDROTEJO).
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 32 m above the foundation level (28.5 m above the river bed). The top of the wall is at a height of 313.5 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 400 m. The volume of the structure is 32,000 m³.
The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 110 m³ / s can be discharged via the flood relief. The design flood is 250 m³ / s.
Reservoir
With the normal storage target of 312 m (maximum 313 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 2.36 km² and holds 22 million m³ of water - of which 18.8 (or 19.69) million m³ can be used become.
power plant
The Póvoa power plant is one of the smallest hydropower plants in Portugal with an installed capacity of 0.74 (or 0.8) MW . The average annual generation is 1.6 (or 2.1) million kWh .
The Francis turbine with a horizontal shaft has a maximum output of 0.757 MW and the associated generator 0.894 MVA . The nominal speed of the turbines is 600 / min. The generator has a nominal voltage of 6.3 kV . In the switchgear , the generator voltage of 6.3 kV is increased to 30 kV by means of a power transformer.
The maximum height of fall is 31.81 m. The maximum flow rate is 3 m³ / s.
The power plant went into operation in 1927. It was renovated in 1990. The power plant is owned by HIDROTEJO but operated by Energias de Portugal (EDP).
