The Pirrís Dam ( Spanish Represa Pirrís ) is a dam in the province of San José , Costa Rica . It dams the Río Pirrís to a small reservoir ( Spanish Embalse Pirrís ). The capital San José is about 30 km north of the dam.

A feasibility study was carried out between November 1989 and June 1992. Construction of the dam and the associated power plant began in January 1997. The official commissioning by the then President of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla , took place on September 12, 2011. The power plant is owned by the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) and is also operated by ICE.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure consists of a gravity dam made of rolled concrete with a height of 113 m; this makes the dam the highest in Costa Rica. The top of the wall is at a height of 1,208 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 266 (or 270) m. The volume of the structure is 710,000 (or 728,000 or 765,000) m³.

The dam wall has a flood relief , through which a maximum of 2,350 m³ / s can be discharged.

A 10.5 km long tunnel leads from the dam to the power plant. The first 8 km are lined with concrete, the remaining 2.5 km with steel. The diameter is reduced from 3.4 m to 2.3 m. A pressure pipeline with a length of 830 m connects to the tunnel and leads into the machine hall of the power plant.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 1,205 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 1.14 km² and holds 30 (or 36.4) million m³ of water. The storage target can fluctuate between 1,160 and 1,205 m above sea level .

power plant

The Pirrís power plant has an installed capacity of 128 (or 134) MW . The expected annual production is around 560 million kWh. The power plant is supposed to cover peak electricity demand for around 2.5 hours twice a day.

The two Pelton turbines of the power plant each produce a maximum of 64 (or 67 or 69) MW and the associated generators 73 (or 89.4) MVA . The nominal speed of the turbines is 600 / min. The diameter of a running wheel is 1.98 m; the diameter of a stator is 5.4 m.

The nominal voltage of the generators is 13.3 (or 13.8) kV . In the switchgear , the generator voltage is increased from 13.3 kV to 230 kV using power transformers.

The drop height given is 829 (or 884 or 890) m. The maximum flow rate is 9 m³ / s per turbine.

Others

The construction costs of the dam (including the power plant) are given as USD 627 and 630 million respectively. The original estimate was that the cost would be USD 292 (or 300) million. The Banco Centroamericano de Integración Económica and the Japan International Cooperation Agency each funded the project with 28%.

The turbines, generators and other electromechanical equipment were supplied by VA Tech Hydro , today's Andritz AG . The order value for this was € 65 million.
