The Roxo dam ( Barragem do Roxo in Portuguese ) is located in the Alentejo region of Portugal in the Beja district . It dams the Roxo to a reservoir (Port. Albufeira da Barragem do Roxo ). The municipality of Ervidel is about three kilometers north of the dam, the small town of Aljustrel is about eight kilometers southwest.

The project to build the dam began in 1958. The construction was completed in 1967. In addition to irrigation, the dam also provides drinking water. It is owned by the Associação de Beneficiários do Roxo .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure consists of a dam on the right and a concrete pillar dam on the left. The height of the structure is 49 m above the foundation level (34 m above the river bed). The crown of the structure is at a height of 139.5 m above sea level . The length of the building crown is 847 m and its width 5.5 m. The volume of the dam is 364,000 m³, the volume of the dam is 106,000 m³.

The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 47 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 64 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 700 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 1,000 years.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 136 m (maximum 137 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 13.78 km² and holds 96.311 million m³ of water - of which 89.511 (or 85.511) million m³ can be used. The minimum stowage destination is 124.5 m.
