The São Domingos dam ( Portuguese Barragem de São Domingos ) is located in the central region of Portugal in the Leiria district . It dams the São Domingos to a reservoir. The municipality of Atouguia da Baleia is located approx. 200 m northwest of the dam.
The project to build the dam began in 1987. The construction was completed in 1993. In addition to the drinking water supply, the dam is also used for irrigation. It is owned by CM Peniche .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a dam with a height of 39 m above the foundation level (33 m above the river bed). The top of the dam is at a height of 46 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 280 m and its width 8 m. The volume of the dam is 260,000 m³.
The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 4.1 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 114.39 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 224.4 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 1,000 years.
Reservoir
With a normal storage target of 42.5 m (maximum 44.76 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.96 km² and holds 7.9 million m³ of water - 7.55 million m³ of this can be used . The minimum congestion destination is 22 m.
