Atouguia da Baleia is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese county of Peniche . It has 8954 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
Finds prove a prehistoric presence of humans since the Neolithic Age , traces of settlement of the Castro culture , the Phoenicians , ancient Greeks , Celtiberians and Romans can also be found. In 711 the area became Arabic .
In the course of the Reconquista , Portugal's first king, D.Afonso Henriques , conquered the area and gave it to Wilhelmo Lacorne in 1160 in recognition of his services in the successful siege of Lisbon and for the repopulation by Franks and Galicians. In 1168 Atouguia received its first town charter, which D.Afonso II confirmed in 1218 , and D.Manuel I renewed it in 1510 .
The place gained importance through the increasing fishing and especially whaling , to which it owes its name affix (Baleia, Portuguese for whale). The previous island of Peniche, which was under the administration of Atouguia, received natural access to land from the 15th century through silting up and displacements and subsequently increased in importance. In 1609 , Peniche was also raised to a small town and, when it was hived off from Atouguias, the seat of its own district.
In the course of the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 and the subsequent Miguelistenkrieg , the Atouguia da Baleia district was dissolved in 1836 and Peniche was incorporated.
