The Tüngeda / Wangenheim dam is a dam in the south of Tüngeda and in the west of Wangenheim in the Thuringian district of Gotha .

history

Already in the Middle Ages there was a lake with a size of 45.5 ha in a natural depression. After the drainage around 1700, the lake area was used as peat cutting from 1840 . The peat was used by Baron von Wangenheim as fuel for the brickworks on the western edge of the village. The peat cut was closed in 1880 under Baron Walrab von Wangenheim . In the following years the area was used as grassland. This use was also discontinued in the middle of the 20th century. As a result, a species-rich wetland developed here . From 1976 to 1978, the inflowing streams Mittagswasser (from Tüngeda), Töllbach (from the direction of Wiegleben in the north) and a nameless small stream from the west were dammed up by the backfilling of dams and have since formed the reservoir.

Todays use

In 1996, the irrigation pump and transformer station were dismantled, so that field irrigation is no longer technically possible today. In addition to the originally intended function in the agricultural sector, namely to supply the water for irrigation of the arable land, which is no longer possible today, the lake is also considered a flood retention basin . In addition, the lake area fulfills purposes that serve nature conservation and local recreation. The lake is also used to raise the low tide and for fishing . The lake is a public body of water of water class 2, so according to the Thuringian Water Act it can be used with paddle boats and sailing boats. Driving on the water surface with a machine drive (including an electric motor) is generally subject to approval.
