The Touvedo dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Touvedo ) is located in the north of Portugal in the Viana do Castelo district . It dams the Lima River into a reservoir. The small town of Ponte da Barca is around five kilometers downstream .

The project to build the dam began in 1987. The construction was completed in 1993 (or 1996). In addition to generating electricity, the dam is also used for irrigation and flood protection. It is owned by the Companhia Portuguesa de Produção de Electricidade (CPPE).

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 42.5 (or 43) m above the foundation base . The top of the wall is at a height of 55 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 133.5 (or 134) m. The volume of the structure is 74,620 (or 75,000) m³.

The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief with three gates. A maximum of 50 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 3,200 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 3,200 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 1,000 years.

Reservoir

With a normal storage target of 50 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 1.72 km² and holds 15.5 million m³ of water - of which 4.5 (or 4) million m³ can be used. The minimum stowage destination at which the machines can still be operated is 47.5 m. With the usable 4.5 million m³ of water, 0.2 million kWh can be generated.

The reservoir serves as a lower basin for the Alto-Lindoso pumped storage power plant . A 4.88 km long tunnel connects the cavern power station of the Alto-Lindoso dam with the Touvedo reservoir.

power plant

With an installed capacity of 22  MW, the Touvedo power plant is one of the smaller hydropower plants in Portugal. The average annual generation is 67 (or 61, 66.8 or 78) million kWh .

The power plant's Kaplan turbine has a maximum output of 22.2 MW and the associated generator 24 MVA . Both the turbine and the generator were supplied by GEC Alsthom . The nominal speed of the turbines is 187.5 / min. The generator has a nominal voltage of 6  kV . In the switchgear , the generator voltage of 6 kV is increased to 63 kV by means of power transformers.

The minimum height of fall is 20 m, the maximum 25 m. The maximum flow rate is 100 m³ / s.

The power plant is owned by the CPPE but operated by EDP .
