The Alto-Lindoso dam ( Barragem do Alto-Lindoso in Portuguese ) is located in the north of Portugal in the Viana do Castelo district near the village of Lindoso . It dams the Lima River to a reservoir (Port. Albufeira da Barragem do Alto-Lindoso ). The border with Spain first runs along the Lima and then through the reservoir.

The project to build the dam began in 1983. The construction was completed in 1992. The dam is used to generate electricity. It is owned by the Companhia Portuguesa de Produção de Electricidade (CPPE).

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a double-curved concrete arch dam with a height of 110 m above the foundation base . The top of the wall lies at a height of 339 m above sea level . The length of the wall crown is 297 (or 298) m and the volume of the structure is 308,500 (or 309,000) m³. The thickness of the dam is 21 m at the bottom and 4 m at the crown.

The dam has both a bottom outlet and two flood reliefs , each with three gates, which are located on the right side of the dam. A maximum of 400 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet; a maximum of 2760 m³ / s can be discharged via the flood discharge through underground tunnels. The design flood is 3500 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once every 1,000 years.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 338 m (maximum 339 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 1.05 (or 1.072) km² and holds 379.01 million m³ of water - 347.91 (or 270 ) Million m³ are used to generate electricity. The minimum congestion destination at which the machines can still be operated is 280 m. With the usable 347.9 million m³ of water, 224.6 million kWh can be generated.

power plant

The Alto-Lindoso pumped storage power plant is one of the largest hydropower plants in Portugal with an installed capacity of 630 (or 634) MW . The average annual generation is 948 (or 909.6, 910 or 933.8) million kWh .

The machine house is located in a cavern 350 m underground. It is connected to the switchgear by a shaft (diameter 6.80 m). The two turbines of the power plant each have a maximum output of 315 (or 317) MW and the associated generators 350 MVA . The rated speed of the turbines is 214 / min (or 214.3). The generators have a nominal voltage of 18  kV . The two machines can go online within 90 seconds. The cavern power plant is connected by a 4.88 km long tunnel to the reservoir of the Touvedo dam , which serves as a lower basin.

The minimum height of fall is 227 m, the maximum 288 m. The maximum flow rate is 125 m³ / s.

There are six single-phase power transformers in the switchgear, which step up the generator voltage from 18 kV to 400 kV. A 400 kV line leads to the substation in Riba de Ave , and another to Spain.

The power plant is owned and operated by the CPPE.
