The Upamayo dam is located on the upper reaches of the Río Mantaro on the border between the Peruvian regions of Junín and Pasco , 27 km south of the city of Cerro de Pasco .

The dam was completed in 1936 and dams the outflow of the Junín Lake , the Río Upamayo . This also raises the water level of Lake Junín. The dam serves both to store water and to regulate runoff for the downstream Malpaso hydropower plant . The barrier structure is 10 m high and 96 m wide. The usable storage space is 441 million m³.
