The dam Urugua-í or dam Norberto Velozo ( Spanish Represa Urugua-í or Represa Norberto Velozo ) is a dam with a hydropower plant in the province of Misiones , Argentina . It dams the Arroyo Urugua-í , a tributary of the Río Paraná , to a reservoir. The Ruta Nacional 12 leads over the dam. The Iguazú National Park is located around 30 km north of the dam.
The dam is used to generate electricity. The first studies and plans for the construction were undertaken in 1978. Construction of the dam began in 1985. It was completed in 1990 and put into operation in the same year. The dam and the Norberto Velozo power station (span. Central hidroeléctrica Norberto Velozo ) are operated by Electricidad de Misiones SA (EMSA).
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a gravity dam made of rolled concrete with a height of 76 (or 77) m. The length of the top of the wall is 665 (or 687) m. The volume of the barrier structure is 600,000 m³.
Reservoir
When the reservoir is fully blocked, it extends over an area of around 90 km² and holds 1.175 billion m³ of water. The reservoir has a length of 35 km with a maximum width of 6 km.
power plant
The power plant's machine house is located about 800 m from the dam on the left bank of the river. The installed capacity is 116 (or 120) MW . The average annual production is given as 355 million kWh . The two Francis turbines each have a maximum output of 60 MW and the generators 70 MVA . The nominal speed of the turbines is 250 / min.
