The Zújar Dam ( Presa de Zújar in Spanish ) is a dam with hydroelectric power plant in the province of Badajoz , Spain . It dams the Zújar , which forms the border between the municipalities of Castuera and Esparragosa de Lares , to a reservoir. In addition to generating electricity, the dam also provides drinking water and irrigation. It was completed in 1964. The dam is owned by Enel also operated and Enel.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 61 m above the foundation base . The top of the wall lies at a height of 321 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 350 (or 353) m. The volume of the dam is 367,800 m³. On the right side of the dam there is another dam wall with a length of 227 (or 228) m and a height above the foundation base of 23.37 m.

The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 230 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 2173 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 3697 (or 4000) m³ / s.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 318 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 14.49 (or 15.87) km² and holds 299 (or 302) million m³ of water. Originally the reservoir had a capacity of 723 (or 725) million m³. As this proved insufficient to compensate for the irregular discharge of the Zújar, the La Serena dam was built upstream, which reduced the capacity of the Zújar reservoir.

power plant

The installed capacity of the power plant is 18.4 (or 20.1 or 28.3) MW . The machine house is at the foot of the dam on the left bank of the river. Another power plant with an installed capacity of 9.69 MW is located on a canal ( Canal del Zújar ) that leads from the machine house.
