Tamariu is a suburb of the Catalan municipality of Palafrugell on the Costa Brava in Spain . It is located on the Mediterranean Sea almost 100 kilometers south of the French border in Catalonia and had 273 inhabitants in 2011. Tamariu probably got its name from the tamarind trees. The tranquil promenade along the beach is lined with two storeys, former fishermen's houses.
The next larger towns are five kilometers west of Palafrugell and 30 kilometers further west, the provincial capital Girona .
The former fishing village now lives from tourism, which multiplies the number of inhabitants in the summer months.
The coast itself consists of (fine) gravel and rocky beaches. Due to the deeply cut main bay, the water is relatively calm and warm, even in stormy seas. The lighthouse Sant Sebastià stands on the 165 m high mountain of the same name and separates Tamariu from the neighboring town of Llafranc .
tourism
A campsite , some apartment houses and hotels are available for tourists . For many years there has been a diving base in the village that offers boat dives up to the vicinity of L'Estartit as well as dives in the approx. 15 m deep and protected bay.

Tamariu can be reached by car or a regular bus service from the coastal road and by plane via Girona Airport, which is approx. 70 km from Tamariu .
particularities
Since the bay of Tamariu contains many different habitats in a small area, the place is regularly the destination of marine biological excursions by the University of Tübingen .
