Henry Siddons Mowbray
Henry Siddons Mowbray (born August 5, 1858 in Alexandria , Egypt , † January 13, 1928 in Washington, DC ) was an American painter.
Life
Mowbray was born in Alexandria to a British colonial official. After losing his parents early on, an uncle took him to live in North Adams , Mass. In the US Mowbray attended for about a year Military Academy in West Point .
During this time Mowbray realized that a military career was out of the question for him and left the army again. He went to Paris and became a student of Léon Bonnat . Mowbray then moved to Jean-Léon Gérôme's studio .
After some success at exhibitions, Mowbray went to Rome to study the ancient masters. Due to his success, Mowbray was entrusted with the management of the American Academy in Rome between 1903 and 1904 .
Mowbray later went back to the United States and settled as a freelance artist in Washington, DC . Mowbray had been a member of the National Academy of Design in New York , NY since 1891, and in 1898 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters .
