Tamnougalt ( Arabic تيسركات) is a Berber village with about 500 inhabitants near the small town of Agdz in the Draa Valley in the province of Zagora in the Drâa-Tafilalet region in southern Morocco .

Location and climate

Tamnougalt is located about 1.5 km north of the Oued Draa at an altitude of about 930  m in the Drâa valley about 79 km southeast of Ouarzazate and 89 km northwest of Zagora . The climate is mostly warm and dry; it can cool down significantly at night. Rain (approx. 100 mm / year) falls almost without exception in the winter half-year.

population

The population of the clay village consists predominantly of Berbers . In addition to various Berber dialects, Arabic is the main language spoken.

economy

In the past, the date palm oasis south of the city played the central role in supplying the population and the caravans. Today, a large part of the population lives on cash transfers from men who work in northern cities or in Europe. Tourism has played an increasingly important role in the economic life of the village since the 1980s.

history

Tamnougalt used to be the capital of the Mezguita oasis ; the origin of the place goes back possibly to the time of the Saadian , but the place experienced an upswing in the time of the Alaouites in the 18th century. From 1874 to 1955, the Glaoui clan, ruling from Telouet, took power.

Attractions

  • The formerly important place still impresses with the numerous ruins of former adobe buildings.
  • There are numerous agriculturally used parcels in the area, but because of the lack of rainfall, they are only partially idyllic.
  • The Kasbah Aït Hammou ou Saïd , built around 1930, is located on a mountain flank about 500 m from the village . This served as the local school until 1978. In 2009 it was restored.
