Tan Lei (March 18, 1963 - April 1, 2016 ) was a Chinese mathematician.

Tan Lei, Oberwolfach 2008

Tan received his PhD in 1987 under Adrien Douady at the University of Paris-South in Orsay ( Accouplements des polynômes quadratiques complexes ). She was an assistant at the University of Geneva and visiting researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics and the University of Bremen. In 1990 she became Maître de Conférences at the Ecole Normale Superieure de Lyon, was Chargé de recherches of the CNRS and visiting scholar at the University of Warwick, before becoming Maître de Conférences at the University of Cergy-Pontoise in 1999 . In 2009 she became a professor at Angers University .

Tan achieved important results on Mandelbrot sets and Julia sets . For example, she proved that the sets at certain points (the Misiurewicz points) are asymptotically similar (with appropriate scaling and rotation). In 1993, together with John Milnor , she provided the first examples of Julia sets that are homeomorphic to fractals called Sierpinski curves .

She was married to the mathematician Hans Henrik Rugh (University of Paris-South Orsay) and had two children.
