Tanahmasa (also Tanah Masa , Indonesian Pulau Tanahmasa ) is one of the Indonesian Batu Islands ( Indonesian Kepulauan Batu ), in the Indian Ocean west of Sumatra .

geography

Tanahmasa is in the center of the Batu Islands. The northern edge of the island extends to the equator . To the northeast is the island of Pini , southwest of Tanahbala . Other smaller islands such as Masa on the northeast coast of Tanahmasa. The archipelago belongs to the administrative region of South Nias ( Indonesian Nias Selatan ). Here Tanamasah forms the district of Tanah Masa with the twelve Desa Makole , Jeke , Sifauruasi , Saeru Melayu , Bawoanalita Saeru , Bawo Orudua , Hale Baluta , Bawo Ofuloa , Baluta , Eho Baluta , Hiligeho Sogawu and Hiliomasio .

The channel between Tanahmasa and Tanahbala is 27 kilometers long, one kilometer wide and only 10 to 20 meters deep. Numerous corals live here.

The highest point on the island is 204  m above sea level. The main town is Baluta on the west coast of Tanahmasa.

fauna

The Taguan , a representative of the giant sliding squirrels, lives on Tanahmasa . An endangered bird species Tanahmasa include the Zimtkopf Green Pigeon , Nicobar Pigeon , Jambu Fruit Dove , Swinhoewellenläufer , Blass foot Shearwater , Christmas Island Frigatebird , Indian Darter , bar-tailed godwit , Great Knot , red-necked stint and Gray-tailed tattler .

Residents

In 2017, 3,662 people, 1,822 men and 1,840 women lived on the island. There is a mosque and 21 churches on the island.

Economy, infrastructure and transport

There is only limited agriculture on the island. Manioc is grown on 40.9 hectares and sweet potatoes on 24.6 hectares. Other agricultural products are chilli, papayas, bananas and pineapples. In 2017, 73.9 tons of cassava and 75 tons of sweet potatoes were harvested in this way. 940 tons of fish were caught from the island's boats. 2146 pigs, 36 goats and 1,887 chickens serve as pets.

Lasonde Airport is located on Tanahmasa . Tanamasah is the only one of the Batu Islands to have trails between the villages within the island. The road from the airport to the port of Tanahmasa is 500 meters long.

Medical care is provided by only eight nurses. There are seven state and private primary schools and one state middle school as educational institutions. In 2017 they went to 677 students. There are no secondary schools on the island.
