Tanaostigmodes tambotis is a wasp species from the family of Tanaostigmatidae discovered in 1995. Tanaostigmodes tambotis forms on the trunks of Tamboti ( Spirostachys africana ) plant galls from. The larvae live in ducts in the plant tissue. A gall can contain up to 60 pupae , which hatch between October and January.

description

female

The females of Tanaostigmodes tambotis are 2 to 2.8 millimeters in length. The upper half of the head has a brown to orange-brown color with a darker coating near the inner edge of the eye and the middle ocellus . The lower part of the head, including the genae , is white to yellowish-white and has a narrow, dark stripe that extends from the torulus to the inner edge of the eye. In some species there is a dark point under the eye on the lateral face. The back of the head is mostly dark in color. The antenna is brownish-black to black with two paler segments of the flagella apically, the radicula and the upper part of the pedicellus being whitish in most individuals. The pronotum and mesoscutum are yellowish-brown to orange-brown. The pronotum is narrowed and the mesoscutum is extended and black. The remainder of the dorsal margin and propodeum are brown-black to black, with the exception of the vertical surfaces of the axillae and, in a few cases, the metanotum, which are yellowish-brown in color. The sides of the thorax with the prepectus are white or slightly darker. The mesopleuron is yellowish-brown to orange-brown. The fore and hind wings have a distinctive pattern, which consists of transparent and dark brown areas. The legs are yellowish brown, with the tip of the tarsus being darker in color. The femur and tibia have an uneven, dark coating. The middle of the femur is significantly darker than the rest of the leg. The gaster is mostly blackish with a yellowish-brown epipygium . In some individuals there is a black-brown coating on the rest of the terga.

male

The males are similar to the females including the wing pattern. However, they lack the dark band that is located in females between the torulus and the inner edge of the eye. The Gaster is yellowish-brown to orange-brown and has three to four black sclerite deposits at the base . The legs are brown-yellow and only the middle femur has a darker basal coating in some individuals.

Initial description

Tanaostigmodes tambotis was first described in 1995 by Gerhard Prinsloo and John LaSalle in the journal African Entomology . The specific epithet is derived from the common name Tamboti for Spirostachys africana .

Distribution area

At the time of the first description, the distribution of Tanaostigmodes tambotis was only proven in the north-west and east of the former Transvaal province . It is unknown whether individuals of this species occur in the entire range of Spirostachys africana in southern and eastern Africa.
