The Tanztheater Homunculus (TTH) is a dance company founded in 1981 by the Viennese choreographer Manfred Aichinger . Together with Nikolaus Selimov , he managed the Homunculus Company until it was dissolved with its 30th anniversary in 2011.

history

In the 1980s Manfred Aichinger was artistic director of most of homunculus' productions. Nikolaus Selimov also choreographed for the company from 1992. From the end of the 1990s, the ensemble also worked regularly with guest choreographers .

The individual pieces were mostly created on the basis of intensive improvisation and research phases in the interplay of dancers and choreographers. From 2003 the Homunculus dance theater also worked in the field of children's and youth theater. The 1990s were the company's most productive phase. In addition to regular guest performances at Viennese theaters, numerous “new spaces” were tracked down and specific artistic concepts developed for them. More than 50 performances per season, performance series with up to 24 performances, each with around 3,000 visitors, represent this decade that has shown the greatest interest in contemporary dance in Vienna to date. Since the turn of the millennium, the production conditions for contemporary dance have also changed radically and to the detriment of dancers and choreographers.

The company did not have its own venue and therefore made guest appearances at numerous venues in Vienna (including dietheater Künstlerhaus, Odeon, WUK , KosmosTheater , Dschungel Wien , Theater Brett , Volksoper Vienna , Vienna State Opera , Theater an der Wien ). Homunculus also appeared as a self-organizer and used rooms that are not intended for theaters (e.g. Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien , Siemens Forum Wien, HALLE 1030, Semper Depot, Sonnenuhrhaus Schönbrunn, Salle de bal of the French Cultural Institute Vienna, Neustifthalle). As part of guest performances abroad, the company appeared in Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, the USA and Cyprus.

budget

The theater work and the infrastructure of the Homunculus dance theater were subsidized in the period 1983-2011 by the Department of Culture of the City of Vienna and the Federal Ministry for Education, Art and Culture . In percentage terms, the company's budget for the entire period consisted of 66.8% funding from the City of Vienna, 23% personal contribution, 8.7% funding from the Federal Ministry for Art and Culture Education and 1.5% sponsors.

Dance mediation

The Homunculus dance theater organized lessons for dance enthusiasts of all ages, pre-education programs for prospective professionals and initiatives in the areas of promoting young talent, public support, summer dance weeks, teacher training and school projects.

In 1987 the company founded DAS STUDIO. Center for modern expressive dance in the 9th district in Vienna. A rehearsal and teaching center was created under the direction of Manfred Aichinger and Silvia Auer. The studio in which courses were offered was continued from 2004 to June 2012 in the company's rehearsal room under the name tanz.raum.homunculus.

Rehearsal room Homunculus

From 1995 to June 2012 the Homunculus dance theater directed the rehearsal room Homunculus in Vienna's 2nd district, in the building of the former Roland stage. In this training and rehearsal center, the promotion of the young generation of choreographers was also intensified through residency programs (including dance theater laboratory 1995/96). The rehearsal room was used extensively by numerous dance professionals for research, rehearsals and presentations. The organization of the rehearsal room was directed from 2004 to 2012 by Sonja Haupt.
