Tash Aw , (歐 大 旭; actually: Aw Ta-Shi ) (* 1971 or 1973 ) is a Malaysian-born writer who currently resides in London . He became famous for his first work, " The Harmony Silk Factory" , published in 2005 in the English original, and in German with the title "Die Seidenmanufaktur zur Schöne Harmonie" . The novel is set in Malaysia in the 1930s and 1940s against the background of Malaysia's history, which was shaped by British colonial rule, Japanese occupation and communist guerrillas . In May 2009 he published his second work "Map of the Invisible World", the German edition with the title "Atlas of the invisible world" was published in September 2009 as a paperback. Tash Aw was born to Malaysian parents in Taipei , the capital of Taiwan . At the age of two he moved back to Malaysia with his parents, where he grew up in the capital, Kuala Lumpur . As a teenager he moved to the UK, where he later studied law in Cambridge and Warwick . After graduating, he worked a. a. several years as a lawyer. During this time he began work on his debut, which he completed during a course in " creative writing " at the University of East Anglia .
