Tatau is an island that belongs to the Tabar Islands in the New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea . Administratively, the island is part of the Namatanai district . The approximately 75 square kilometer island is 35 km northeast of New Ireland , the main island of the province. The island is about 10 km wide, 15 km long and mainly characterized by flat land with andesitic elevations of over 300 m and raised coral limestone .

Tatau is also 4 km south of Simberi and separated by a narrow channel from Tabar, the eponymous main island of the Tabar group.

The Dutch navigators Jacob Le Maire and Willem Cornelisz Schouten passed the Tabar Islands in 1616 without realizing that Tatau was separated from Tabar.

The island was named Northern Gardner Island during the German colonial era . At that time there were coconut palm plantations and a trader station in the north.
