Simberi is a volcanic island that belongs to the Tabar Islands in the New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea . The approximately 40 square kilometer island is located approximately 900 km northeast of Port Moresby and 25 km northeast of New Ireland , the main island of the province. The island is about 10 km wide and is dominated by mountainous terrain in the east. The eroded volcanic cone is about 340 meters high. The coast of the island is mostly steep and surrounded by a marginal reef . In the volcanic highlands on the east side of the island there is an open pit mine , in which gold and silver are mined and which bears the name Simberi Oxid-Gold-Project . The open pit mine is 100% owned by the Australian company Allied Gold . Gold mining commenced in February 2008.
