The Tatonka GmbH (proper spelling: TATONKA ) is a German manufacturer of recreational and outdoor -Artikeln headquartered in Dasing in Aichach-Friedberg near Augsburg. Tatonka in the language means the Sioux , buffalo '.
The company is family owned and run by the second generation. The Dasing site is home to design, sales and management. There is no production in Germany, the Tatonka products are manufactured exclusively in two company-owned factories in Vietnam . Mountech Co. Ltd in Ho Chi Minh City , with production sites in Ho Chi Minh City and An Nhơn in Bình Định , employed around 700 people in March 2017.
History and organization
In 1981 Winfried Schechinger founded a trading company in Dasing under the company Mountain Sport GmbH Vertrieb von Bergsportartartikel . a. brought brands like PRE-Ski and Jansport to Europe in the 1980s .
Since 1989, the company has had its subsidiary Mountech Co. Ltd. in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam . Mountech Co. Ltd. is not consolidated in the annual financial statements of Tatonka GmbH. The company says it excludes child labor in its own production facilities.
In 1993, when Mountain Sport GmbH returned the license for the sales and production of the Jansport brand to the US group VF, the company needed a new brand name; Inspired by the film Dances with Wolves , Winfried Schechinger registered the word mark Tatonka in 1993 . The company renamed Tatonka GmbH quality equipment for leisure activities .
In November 2004 Andreas Schechinger - son of the company founder - took over the management. He has been working in the company in product development since 1991 and completed a commercial apprenticeship at Globetrotter Equipment from 1989 to 1990 . Andreas Schechinger is a board member of the Federal Association of the German Sporting Goods Industry (BSI) and treasurer of the outdoor specialist group .
According to the company, Tatonka products are sold in around 4,000 specialty stores in 38 countries.
According to the Federal Gazette, the company employs 72 people at the Dasing site, and around 1,000 people worldwide, according to company information. Dasing is a development location and distribution center for the whole of Europe.
Tatonka is a member of the European Outdoor Group (EOG) based in Zug, Switzerland . The association was founded in 2003 to represent the interests of the outdoor industry on behalf of the member companies at European level. To become a member, the company must be an outdoor brand with a turnover in Europe exceeding four million euros and trading in at least four European countries.
Brands and products
According to the company, the product range of Tatonka GmbH includes a range of 2,000 leisure and outdoor products. Up to 80 new developments are added each season. The palette ranges from textiles , rucksacks and bags to tents and cookware .
As their own brand, they carry the brand name Tatonka .
Tatonka GmbH has also taken over the distribution of the US American brand Teva since 1993 , which mainly produces outdoor shoes and sandals.
Another division is clothing and equipment for the military and police. The division operates under the Tasmanian Tiger brand .
Clean Clothes Campaign
2009 Tatonka was in a debate since 1990 existing international Clean Clothes Campaign involved (Clean Clothes Campaign CCC). It was criticized to what extent Tatonka complied with the ILO core labor standards (freedom of organization, right to collective bargaining, ban on child labor, forced labor and discrimination).
Tatonka has now been certified with the SA8000 standard by TÜV Rheinland .
