The Tatra vole ( Microtus tatricus , Syn : Pitymys tatrius ) is a member of the root family that is endemic to some parts of Eastern Europe.

Appearance

The Tatra vole has a body length of 9.8 to 11.7 centimeters, the tail is 3.4 to 4.9 centimeters and the hind feet are 1.6 to 1.9 centimeters long. The ears are 0.9 to 1.25 centimeters long, the condylobasal length is between 2.29 and 2.65 centimeters and the zygomatic width is 1.34 to 1.57 centimeters. The eye diameter is 2 millimeters. The weight of the individual animals is between 20 to 42 grams. This species has a long, dark, rust-brown fur on the back, the belly is white and not clearly demarcated. The tail is two-colored. The feet are white. The rear foot has 6 callouses. The female has 2 pairs of teats.

distribution and habitat

This species occurs in the Czech Republic , Slovakia and Poland v. a. in the Tatras and the Beskids . It inhabits the open spruce forests with rowan bushes and the Krummholzzone , mountain mats at altitudes between 1,000 and 2,300 meters above sea level. NN.

Way of life

The Tatra vole lives in the underground passages of other animals or under the stones of the scree slopes. She does not actively dig burrows herself, but uses the abandoned burrows of other animals. It feeds on grasses, berries, leaves and mosses. The life expectancy of the animals is 18 months.

Reproduction

The males become sexually mature at the age of 12 months, the females a little earlier. The gestation period is 21 days. The litter consists of 2 to 4 cubs who only open their eyes for the first time when they are around 10 days old.

Hazard and protection

Since this species is still relatively common and also in protected areas, it is classified by the IUCN in the category ( Least Concern ) not endangered. It is also listed in Appendix II of the Bern Convention .
