Tatsuki Machida ( Japanese 町 田 樹 , Machida Tatsuki ; born March 9, 1990 in Kawasaki ) is a former Japanese figure skater who started in a single run . He studied literature at Kansai University .

Career

Machida made his debut in the 2007 Junior World Championships and finished ninth. In the same year he also took part in the Japanese senior championships for the first time and finished them in 13th place.

In 2010 Machida won his first medal at an international championship with silver at the Four Continents Championships in Jeonju .

In the 2012/13 season Machida won the Cup of China and won his first Grand Prix competition . He qualified for the first time for the Grand Prix final , which he finished sixth. In the following season, Machida won gold in both of his Grand Prix competitions, namely the Cup of Russia and Skate America . He was fourth in the Grand Prix final.

After six unsuccessful attempts due to strong competition, Machida made it to the podium at the Japanese championships for the first time in December 2013, finishing second . This was the first time he qualified for the Olympic Winter Games and World Championships .

His Olympics debut ended in fifth place. In the team competition held for the first time, he won the silver medal with the Japanese team. On his world championship debut in his native Saitama , Machida immediately succeeded in becoming vice world champion behind his compatriot Yuzuru Hanyū . After the short program, Machida was even in the lead. Machida also showed a faultless performance against Igor Stravinski's Firebird in the freestyle and was defeated by Hanyū in the end with only 0.33 points. He had a personal best in all segments, 98.21 points in the short program, 184.05 points in the freestyle and 282.26 points in the overall performance.

On December 28, 2014 Tatsuki Machida announced his retirement from active competitive sport at the Japanese championships, where he qualified for the 2015 World Championships and was also nominated. In April 2015 he plans to start studying at Waseda University and wants to work as a researcher in the future.
