The Tatung Einstein TC-01 was an 8-bit home and personal computer, which was developed by the Taiwanese company Tatung in Bradford , England , but produced in Telford , England . The computer was essentially designed for operation in small companies. Although the hardware of the computer was based on the MSX standard, the device was not compatible with it.

The Einstein was launched in England in October 1984 and 5,000 were exported to Taipei later that year . A Tatung monitor (monochrome or color) and a printer were offered as accessories . It was comparatively large and the housing offered the possibility of installing one or two floppy disk drives (size: 3 inches), which were manufactured by Hitachi . At that time, a floppy disk drive was unusual, as the data on a home computer was mostly stored on a cassette drive. The computer had a CP / M -compatible operating system (Xtal) and served with a BASIC - interpreter delivered. In the top of the case there was a recess in which a corresponding monitor could be placed in order to ensure an optimal distance between the screen and the computer user. The device was initially sold at a price of £ 499.

Because it was more expensive than the competing products and because it did not serve any niche application, the Tatung Einstein was not an economic success. The successor device Tatung Einstein 256 was not successful either.
