The pigeon neck Amazone ( Amazona vinacea ) even pigeons neck Amazone called, is a parrot species of the subfamily of arini . The basic color of the plumage of this amazon species , which grows to a height of 30 centimeters, is green. The gray-reddish breast plumage is characteristic of this Amazon species. The reins and forehead are plumed red on the head. The feathers on the chin are pink. Pigeon-necked amazons show no sexual dimorphism and no subspecies have been described.

The range of the pigeon-necked parrot is limited to the southeast of Brazil , the northeast of Argentina and the southeast of Paraguay. It is a pure inhabitant of tropical or subtropical rainforests and occurs mainly in the lowlands, in the southeast of Brazil, but also at altitudes up to 2000 meters.

Pigeon-necked amazons eat flowers, fruits, seeds, buds and leaves. Occasionally they also invade orange plantations. They live in pairs or in small family groups during the breeding season and outside the breeding season can also be observed in small swarms with up to 30 individuals. Pigeon-necked parrots differ from other Amazon parrots, among other things, in that they are able to spread their neck feathers very far. This behavior is also described in a less pronounced form for the Venezuela Amazons and the Müller Amazons .

Population numbers are not known for the pigeon-necked parrot. However, the population is considered to be in decline, as extensive deforestation and the expansion of agricultural areas have destroyed large parts of their habitat. In addition, the animals are still caught for export, which is now illegal.
