Taufiq Ismail (born June 25, 1935 in Bukittinggi , West Sumatra Province ) is an Indonesian poet and writer of short stories and political writings.

Taufiq Ismail comes from a family of teachers and journalists and belongs to the Minangkabau ethnic group . As a young librarian he learned a. a. Know works by Karl May . As a Milwaukee high school scholar , he read Edgar Allan Poe , Robert Frost , Walt Whitman, and Hemingway . He studied in the USA, Cairo and at Universitas Indonesia . His writing career began in the 1960s. As a pioneer of Generation 66 , he criticized Sukarno's censorship policy . He became co-editor of Horison magazine . His political statements meant that he had to give up teaching. Later governments were also criticized by him.

His work has been translated into English and Russian. He received various literary prizes abroad for this. For the Frankfurt Book Fair 2015, his poems were published in German translation in an anthology.
