According to tradition , Taurinus of Évreux ( French Saint Taurin , * around 350; † around 425) is the first bishop of the Diocese of Évreux in Normandy . His feast day is August 11th.

Vita

The origin and dates of the saint's life are unknown; written tradition does not begin until the 9th or 10th century. It is said that he was sent by the Pope to northern Gaul to convert the heathen; later he was tortured under the prefect Licinius, but he was spared martyrdom because he resurrected Marinus, the prefect's son who had died in a riding accident. Later he converted a Diana temple into a Marienkirche. More miraculous and legendary reports and stories follow. After reading Mass, Taurinus died peacefully in his chair.

Adoration

The bishop's relics were kept in Évreux , but at the end of the 9th century they were brought to Lezoux and from there to Cluny as well as to Gigny (Jura) , Pézy and Chartres due to constant Norman incursions . Only a few fragments of bone remained in Evreux; For this a gilded reliquary (chasse) was made around the middle of the 13th century , which - as one of the few of its kind - also survived the revolutionary years. In addition, several churches in northern France have the patronage of St. Taurinus.

presentation

The reliquary as well as some stained glass windows from the 15th century contain the oldest depictions of the saint, usually depicted in the bishop's robe.
