The Taxaklamm is a gorge on the Unterberg massif in the municipality of Kirchdorf in Tirol in the Kitzbühel district in Austria .

geography

The Taxaklamm is located at the entrance of the Elsental and has a length of approx. 150 meters. Several mountain trenches below the Hefferthorn (including Heffertgraben, Lackgraben, Vogelgraben) converge in the Elsental into the Taxaschlucht. The Taxabach drains almost the entire southern slope of the Unterberg massif with an area of ​​around 7 km². The Taxabach flows into the Großache in the Hagertal .

The rocks of the gorge are up to 25 meters deep. In some places the gorge is only a few meters wide.

ecology

The gorge is located in the Hefferthorn-Fellhorn-Sonnenberg nature reserve and is managed as a gorge biotope (biotope number 3928-102 / 1) by the municipality of Kirchdorf in Tirol. Beech and spruce dominate the gorge area . Alpine dog rose and whitebeam grow on the very steep walls .

The creek bed is rocky and can only be accessed on guided canyoning tours. The entrance is by abseiling below a waterfall . The gorge may not be used after it has rained.

In August 2016, a large-scale rescue operation took place in which 48 people (42 tourists and 6 guides) had to be rescued from the gorge. Despite heavy rain, two canyoning groups entered the gorge. 46 mountain rescuers, 75 firefighters, various paramedics, police officers and alpine policemen with police and emergency helicopters were involved in the rescue.
