Ted Brandsen

Ted Brandsen (* 1959 in Kortenhoef ) is a Dutch ballet dancer and choreographer.

Brandsen began his training as a dancer in the US while studying history, drama and computer science at Hamilton College as an exchange student . He then attended the Scapino Ballet School in Amsterdam and in 1981 was engaged by the Het Nationale Ballet . Here he gained his first experiences as a choreographer during a choreography workshop in 1985.

In 1991 he left the national ballet to work as a freelance choreographer. He has choreographed for various Dutch ballet groups, including the television ballet of the Nederlandse Omroep Stichting , for the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts , the CaDance Festival and the Holland Dance Festival in The Hague. Works such as Four Sections (1992), Crossing the Border (1993), Blue Field (1995) and Bach Moves (1995) were created.

In 1995 Brandsen took over the artistic direction of the West Australian Ballet , with which he realized several full-length performances in addition to one-act pieces such as Carmen and Bridge Variations , including Chrissie Parrott's Coppelia , Romeo and Juliet in his own choreography. For Carmen he was awarded the Australian Dance Award for Choreography . In addition, he commissioned Australian choreographers such as Stephen Page , Gideon Obarzanek , Natalie Weir , Simone Clifford and Adrian Burnett with short one-act plays for his troupe.

In 2001 Brandsen returned to the Dutch National Ballet as deputy director and choreographer, and in 2003 he succeeded Wayne Eagling as artistic director. The creations Light Journey (2002), Body (2004), Firebird (2004), Stealing Time (2006), Hallelujah Junction (2007), Coppelia (2008), In Between (2008), Duo (2010), Raï were created here (20211) and Verge (2013).
