The TeeGschwendner GmbH is a German company trading in tea based in Meckenheim . Around 125 specialist shops in Germany under the name TeeGschwendner are affiliated with the franchise company. The company employs around 150 people at the system headquarters in Meckenheim, and around 1,000 people are employed in the owner-managed specialist shops. This makes the company the largest specialist tea retailer in Germany. The main focus of the company is the trade in loose leaf teas.
history
The first tea shop was opened in 1976 under the name Der Teeladen by the then 22-year-old Albert Gschwendner together with his wife Gwendalina in Trier. The business idea came about because back then there were only a few shops for tea. In 1977 the second tea shop followed in Bonn, and in 1978 the Der Teeladen Gebr. Gschwendner GmbH was founded together with brother Karl.
With the entry into franchising in 1982, the nationwide expansion began, followed by other specialist shops in Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg. In 1985 the group comprised 25 franchise businesses and 3 specialty stores under its own management. In 1993 there were already 65 franchise shops, the headquarters were relocated from Bornheim to a new company building in Meckenheim. In 1999, a new brand identity followed under the motto “Trading and drinking tea”, and flagship stores were opened in Frankfurt and Hamburg. In 2000, as part of a production expansion, an in-house laboratory wing was created in which, in addition to external controls, all teas are regularly checked for possible residues and contaminants. In 2001 an online shop was set up. To avoid confusion with other providers, the name was changed to TeeGschwendner. In 2005 the company opened tea stores in the United States, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Brazil.
TeeGschwendner received the award as Franchisor of the Year 2005 from the business magazine Impulse and the German Franchise Association . In the same year, TeeGschwendner also received an award for the best franchise system in the F&C partner satisfaction survey 2005. In 2009 and 2013, TeeGschwendner was also recognized as the best franchise system.
Since 2007, the TeeGschwendner Academy has been offering tea sommelier qualifications in cooperation with the IHK Bonn / Rhein-Sieg. Tasting tea and imparting detailed knowledge about tea, its preparation and its nutritional-physiological aspects are the contents of the IHK-certified training. The advanced training includes 100 teaching units and a 3-day internship in one of the specialist shops.
In 2009, TeeGschwendner took first place at the World Tea Championship in Las Vegas with two teas: No. 988 Pineapple Mango and No. 922 Earl Gray No. 69th were winners in their category. In the same year the company received the Golden Award from the Institute for Franchising and Cooperation. The award recognized the quality of the relationship between the franchise headquarters and franchise partners. In 2013 and 2016, TeeGschwendner received the Golden Award again.
Company founder Albert Gschwendner died in July 2010 at the age of 56. The company was initially continued by Thomas Holz. Thomas Holz and founding son Jonathan Gschwendner have been part of the management team since May 2019.
In cooperation with Philips Germany, a new tea maker was developed in 2011 that is a kettle and teapot in one. The design was awarded the iF product design award 2012.
In 2013, the bamboo pomelo varieties achieved 1st place in the Flavored Herbal Mix category and the Darjeeling FTGFOP1 Soom First Flush BIO (No. 233) flight tea in the Darjeeling category at the North American Tea Championship.
In 2017, TeeGschwendner GmbH was awarded the Green Franchise Award for sustainable and environmentally friendly business for the first time. The jury justified its decision by saying that TeeGschwendner is a role model for ecology, economy, culture and social affairs and that it consistently implements the sustainability concept throughout the company and with the franchise partners.
At that time, 125 specialty franchise shops were active on the German market, 137 worldwide.
range
There are around 350 varieties to choose from in the core range. These include classic black and green teas , white teas , rooibos and honeybush teas, as well as flavored teas, fruit teas and herbal teas , mainly from organic farming.
Social
TeeGschwendner is involved in several projects, particularly for the environment and nature in the tea-growing areas:
Nepal project
Together with the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) and Gorkha Tea Estate, TeeGschwendner supports 200 smallholder families from the Shree Sunderpani Cooperative in the Ilam tea district in Nepal . A new tea factory has been processing the tea leaves of the small businesses since 2009. Tea processing machines were purchased and experts advise the factory on processing and transporting the leaves. The smallholders were instructed in the production of organic compost and the households received cows as a key element of organic cultivation, and biogas plants were also provided. Organic certification took place in July 2011. The Spirit of Sunderpani tea, which has been available since October 2012, emerged from the project. Part of the sales proceeds go back to the smallholders.
Tiger Protection Project & Club of Good Hope
From 2008 to 2018, TeeGschwendner supported a tiger protection project in South India together with the Naturschutzbund Deutschland. TeeGschwendner has been supporting NABU's nature and environmental protection projects since 2018 with a donation of 1.00 euros per 250 g pack of organic teas Assam Kaziranga No. 166, Green Manjolai No. 355 and Black Oothu No. 350.
As a founding member of the Club of Good Hope, which, under the leadership of missio, supports young people affected by violence in South Africa, TeeGschwendner supports aid projects in South Africa with the sale of the club tea pineapple and passion fruit.
Myanmar project
Since 2015, TeeGschwendner has also been involved in a tea project in Myanmar together with GIZ. Based on the Nepal project, a first tea factory was built, which is now fully owned by the residents of the village of Sikay Inn. In this model factory, new processing methods and machines are tested and processes are optimized.
